Defensive players scored two second-half touchdowns yesterday to help spark host Anacostia to a 28-9 victory over Interhigh rival Wilson.
With the Indians trailing, 9-8, at the three-minute mark of the third quarter, defensive end Nathaniel Cole scooped up a fumbled pitchout by Carl Hall (16 carries, 75 yards), and raced 45 yards for a touchdown to put the Indians ahead, 14-9.
Wilson was forced to punt on its next possession but Thierno Johnson recovered a fumbled return by Anacostia to give the Tigers possession at the Anacostia 38.
On the ensuing play, quarterback Carlos Diaz's pass to tight end Melvin Tuten was picked off by cornerback Andre Powell, who sprinted 64 yards down the sideline for a touchdown to give the Indians a comfortable, 20-9 lead.
"The tight end ran a five-and-out pattern, but our outside linebacker had him covered well so I just stepped in and picked it off," said Powell.
Anacostia led at the half, 8-2, on a one-yard run by Joseph Dorsey, set up by an option pass from Dorsey to Frank Young that covered 20 yards and gave Anacostia a first down at the Tigers 15.
The Tigers got on the scoreboard just before the half when Cole, also the Indians' punter, couldn't handle a bad snap from center and fumbled it out of the end zone for a safety.
Wilson (2-2) came out determined in the second half.
Defensive lineman Charles Reid sacked quarterback Anthony Butler in the end zone, jarring the ball loose. Eric Dow recovered the fumble for a touchdown to move the Tigers in front, 9-8.
On Anacostia'a next possesion, Wilson safety Demond Arter (two interceptions) picked off a pass and returned it to the Indians 45. But even with the ball, the lead and the momentum, Wilson couldn't hang on.
Anthony Brooks (12 carries, 72 yards) scored on a 21-yard run for the Indians final score. Wilson (2-2) 0 2 7 0 9 Anacostia (1-4) 0 8 6 14 28
