Leah Almahurst won the Breeders Crown for 2-year-old pacing fillies at Freestate Raceway in Laurel last night with an impressive victory in the final in 2:00 1/5 over a sloppy track. Leah Almahurst took the first elimination in 1:59 4/5.
Driven by Bill Fahy, the leading driver last year at Pompano Park near Miami, Leah Almahurst followed favorite So Cozy and John Campbell to the outside after the half-mile pole in the final.
As So Cozy began to inch up on pacesetter Marcasite, Leah Almahurst sat comfortably in third until the top of the stretch, when Fahy made a bold, three-wide move.
Leah Almahurst won by 4 1/4 lengths over the closing Conquered Quest and driver Bruce Nichells. Three Mile Island, driven by William Gale, came on for third. So Cozy, who had won the second elimination in 2:01, faded to fifth.
"Things worked out great for me all night long," said Fahy. "I didn't have to use her in the first heat so I had plenty left in the final." It was Fahy's first Breeders Crown victory.
It was the sixth straight victory for Leah Almahurst, a $115,000 yearling purchase trained by Gene Riegle. Her career earnings are $378,066.
