Data: Signed following the 1987 draft, Rubbert was the Redskins' fourth-string quarterback during preseason until he was waived Aug. 31. Joined replacement team for first day of practice Sept. 23, walked out, then rejoined team two days later saying he had "made a mistake." Is Louisville's all-time leader in passing and total offense and owns numerous single-game and single-season school records.

Data: Pleaded no contest last November to charges of attempting to deliver cocaine. Sentenced to six years in prison, but was put on probation for all but 90 days. Later violated conditions of a work release and, according to his attorney, still must serve 90 days on a penal farm when his season ends and, according to ruling by the NFL, must avoid further drug-related conduct and any other conduct detrimental to the Redskins and the NFL. A star at Tennessee, where he led Volunteers to 1985 Sugar Bowl and ended his career ranked in top five all-time in several categories, Robinson's most recent football experience is eight-game stint with the semipro Richmond Ravens.

Data: Will also return punts and kickoffs. A seventh-round draft choice by the Redskins in 1985, Vital hurt a hamstring and spent the '85 season on injured reserve and as a member of the Redskins scout team. After being the last cut from Washington's 1986 roster, he was picked up by the New York Giants, who eventually waived him. Tried professional baseball before opening a liquor/grocery store in his hometown of Loreauville, La.

Data: A survivor. Played with Arena Football's Washington Commandos this past summer. A junior college transfer, he played two years at West Virginia State before signing as a free agent with the Cleveland Browns in 1983. Upon his release from the Browns during preseason, he signed with the U.S. Football League's Pittsburgh Maulers. Played 16 games for the Maulers, gaining 495 yards on 107 carries and catching 20 passes for 163 yards. Selected by the Tampa Bay Bandits when the Maulers disbanded, Holman also played for the Arizona Outlaws before coming to the Commandos.

Data: Wilson was the Redskins' 10th-round draft choice in 1987 and was released Sept. 7. He returned on the first day of practice for nonunion players, left that day, then returned last week. Wilson had 4,854 combined yards in his college career. He is the all-time leading receiver at Central Florida (156 receptions for 2,443 yards). He also returned 89 kickoffs for a 23.8-yard average, both school records.

Data: Will also serve as a punt and kickoff returner. Originally a walk-on quarterback at Oklahoma, Shepard, who has excellent speed, ended up catching 70 passes during his career to become the school's second all-time leading receiver. Returned total of 70 punts, including single-season record 29 as a junior, for 596 yards. Signed by the Redskins as a free agent after the 1987 draft and waived in August.

College: Tulane.

Data: Signed by Atlanta in 1986 as a free agent, he was released and then re-signed by the Falcons in 1987. Caravello transferred to Tulane from El Camino (Calif.) Junior College. He played fullback as a junior, gaining 261 yards and making 10 receptions. As a senior, he moved to nose guard and made 42 solo tackles. He plays backup defensive tackle for the Redskins, too.

Data: Caught five passes for 87 yards for the Redskins during the 1987 preseason. Transferred to Utah from Santa Ana (Calif.) Junior College. In two years with the Utes, caught total of 111 passes for 1,099 yards.

Data: Signed as a free agent by the Redskins following the 1987 draft, Carlson was waived during training camp. After transferring from Boston University, he earned all-New England honors as a tackle in 1984 and '85, and also played center and tight end.

Data: Signed by the Redskins as a free agent in 1987, Brilz started for two years at Oregon State. Switched from tackle to guard prior to his senior year.

Data: Served a four-year hitch in the U.S. Marine Corps before going to Missouri, where he became a co-captain his senior year, a second-team all-Big Eight selection and was selected to play in the Blue-Gray game. Graduated from school with one year of eligibility remaining, became a free agent and was signed by the Atlanta Falcons, who waived him.

Data: A four-year letter-winner and two-year starter at Colorado, Coyle was named all-Big Eight and honorable mention all-America following his senior year. He played in both the Senior Bowl and the Japan Bowl all-star games and was signed by the Redskins as a free agent.

Data: A four-year letter winner at Richmond, Toibin was the Spiders' punter for four years and the kicker for three. He averaged 38.3 yards on 197 career punts and made 30 of 51 field goal attempts and 70 of 77 extra point attempts. His 160 total points ties him for the school's all-time scoring record. Played in East-West all-star game.

Data: As a senior at Jackson State, Martin made 61 tackles, 12 tackles for losses, seven sacks. As a junior, he made 42 tackles, eight for losses, seven sacks and an interception.

Data: Signed by the Redskins following the 1987 draft, Thompson was waived this summer. A four-year starter at Minnesota, he compiled a career total of 172 tackles.

Data: Has been to Redskins training camps in 1986 and '87. A transfer to Illinois from Ventura (Calif.) Junior College, he played two seasons for the Illini. As a senior, he made 30 tackles and was voted the team's most courageous player.

College: Northwestern.

Data: Signed by the Redskins as a free agent following the 1987 draft, Karras was released during training camp. Made 110 tackles as a senior at Northwestern. His father, Ted Sr., played nine seasons in the NFL, including five with the Chicago Bears. He is the nephew of former Redskin Lou Karras and former Detroit Lion Alex Karras.

Age: 26. Experience: Fifth year.

College: Clemson.

Data: Started all 16 games at right tackle in 1985 for the Falcons, finishing with 81 tackles and 3 1/2 sacks. Also played on special teams that year, blocking two field goal attempts in Atlanta's 14-13 win over the Minnesota Vikings. Was waived by the Falcons after playing five games last season. He started three games after making the team as a rookie free agent in 1983 and eight games in '84 before injuring his neck. Signed this season by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, he was released late in training camp. A three-year starter at Clemson, Benish was an all-Atlantic Coast Conference selection as a junior and a preseason all-America pick as a senior, but was slowed by injuries. Was selected as the model for the statue given to members of the all-Madden team.

Data: Played 17 games with the USFL's Arizona Wranglers in 1983. Traded to the Denver Gold, he played 16 games for that club in 1984. He was signed by the Philadelphia Eagles in 1985, but was waived during training camp.

Data: During his four years at Maryland, the Charlottesville native made a school-record 485 tackles. Selected to the all-ACC team each of his last two seasons, he was selected during the seventh round of the 1985 draft by the Green Bay Packers, but released. Signed later by the Buffalo Bills, he played 14 games for that club in '85, but was not included in the 1986 preseason depth chart.

Data: A high school all-America at Oakton, Burmeister went on to attend North Carolina, where he started as a wide receiver, moved to defensive back and ended up starting at free safety as a senior, helping to replace striking Redskin Tim Morrison, who had graduated. Was winner of ACC coaches' 1985 Brian Piccolo Award, given to the conference's most courageous player; Burmeister had come back from a badly broken leg that forced him to miss all of 1983 season; he also is diabetic.

Data: A quarterback turned cornerback at Mississippi, Lane has played for the CFL's Calgary Stampeders and Toronto Argonauts; the Italian Football League's Verona Redskins and the New York Jets and the Kansas City Chiefs. Was working as a commercial real estate broker in Connecticut before joining the Redskins.

College: Wyoming.

Data: Will also hold for place kicks. In six games last year with the Denver Broncos, Weil averaged 39.5 yards on 34 punts. Signed with the Redskins prior to the '87 draft and was released on Aug. 31. A freshman walk-on at Wyoming, he became an all-America his senior year, when he averaged 45.6 yards per punt. He had a brief stint with the Falcons in 1984 and with the Houston Oilers in 1985.
