Australia's Pat Cash and Peter Doohan defeated Anand Amritraj and Vasudevan Srinivasan, 6-3, 6-4, 6-4 to cut India's lead to 2-1 in the Davis Cup semifinals in Sydney.

The semifinals end today with singles matches pitting Indian captain Vijay Amritraj against John Fitzgerald and Ramesh Krishnan against Wally Masur.

In the other semifinal, Spain's Emilio Sanchez and Sergio Casal defeated Sweden's Mats Wilander and Anders Jarryd, 6-0, 6-3, 2-6, 6-4, in Barcelona after a three-hour rain delay. Peter Lundgren beat No. 1 Ivan Lendl, 6-3, 4-6, 7-6 (10-8), in the semifinals of the TransAmerica Open in San Francisco. Lendl had won 28 consecutive matches, his last loss coming to Cash in the Wimbledon final three months ago. Lundgren, ranked 49th in the world, saved two match points and won in 3:12 on his fifth match point of the tie breaker. He'll play Jim Pugh (58th) for the title . . .

Third-seeded Lori McNeil broke No. 2 Zina Garrison's serve twice in the opening three games, then went on to a 6-2, 6-4 straight-set semifinal victory in the Virginia Slims of New Orleans. No. 1 seed Chris Evert advanced to the final, by forfeit over Wendy Turnbull.
