Frankie Allen, Virginia Tech's interim basketball coach, says two of his fellow assistants under Charlie Moir will not be retained.
Allen said Bobby Stevens has quit and will be replaced by Rich Shrigley. Page Moir, a part-time coach under his father, has taken an assistant's job at Roanoke College. Virginia Tech assistant athletic director Danny Monk will coach part time . . .
Brigham Young Coach LaVell Edwards says he is amazed by the courage of cornerback Kirk Davis, who is expected to start his third consecutive game Saturday even though he has Hodgkin's disease.
Davis, 25, a junior from San Jose, learned three weeks ago he has cancer of the lymph system. He has refused to take himself out of the lineup because BYU's two starting cornerbacks have been injured.
"Kirk is one of the most courageous people of anyone I've ever had experience with," Edwards said. "He's asked the doctors to put off the surgery until next week," when at least one of the injured starters is expected to be back.
This week's game will be his last this season before he begins undergoing surgery and treatment. In the three games he has started this fall, Davis has made 18 tackles, blocked a kick, recovered a fumble and returned an interception for a touchdown.
