PRINCETON, N.J., OCT. 10 -- Two years ago, Jim Garrett was the head football coach at Columbia. Two of his sons, John and Jason, were enrolled there, and a third, Judd, was in high school and almost sure to follow his brothers. But Garrett was fired and, when he left, his sons transferred to Princeton.

Today, the Tigers defeated Columbia, 38-8, and the three Garrett brothers were the major reason for a victory that extended Columbia's losing streak to 35 straight games, breaking Northwestern's NCAA Division I record of futility, set between 1979 and 1982. The Lions last victory was on Oct. 15, 1983, at Yale, 21-18.

"Maybe the pressures of the streak got to us a little bit more than I thought they would," Columbia Coach Larry McElreavy said. "But one way or another, I'm going to get our kids to play football my way, get them to believe they can win. That's the biggest obstacle."

The Garrett brothers formed an imposing obstacle today. John, a senior split end, caught three passes for 90 yards and a touchdown; Jason, the junior quarterback, completed 10 of 17 passes for 173 yards; and Judd, a sophomore tailback, rushed for 147 yards and three touchdowns.

Judd Garrett, who gained 127 yards on 13 attempts in the first half, opened the scoring on the second play from scrimmage, going around the right end virtually untouched for a 58-yard touchdown.

After a Columbia punt, it took the Tigers three plays to score on a 74-yard pass down the left sideline from Jason Garrett to John Garrett.

Again, Columbia punted, and again the Tigers marched down the field. On fourth and one at the 1, Judd Garrett scored on a pitch over the left side.

The first-half scoring ended when senior fullback Jerry Santillo ran over from the 4 and Rob Goodwin made his 51st straight extra point, breaking Charlie Gogolak's school record set in 1964-65.

The Lions finally got on the board 1:03 into the fourth quarter as fullback Chris Konovalchik ran in from the 14.
