Senior Dwayne Redd ran for two first-half touchdowns and third-ranked DeMatha held on in the final minute last night to defeat 18th-ranked Gonzaga, 19-13, in a dramatic Metro Conference game at Good Counsel.

The Stags raised their record to 6-0 and the Eagles slipped to 4-2.

Redd ran for 91 yards on 21 carries, including 65 yards in the first half. The Stags had a 19-13 lead at halftime.

The Eagles had a chance to tie or win in the final minute. With the ball at the DeMatha 40-yard line, Gonzaga quarterback Greg Lilly threw a fourth-and-15 pass over the middle. Receiver Phillip Mirabelli was wide open at the 18, but the ball slid off his fingertips and the Stags regained possession and ran out the clock.

The Eagles, who trailed 19-7 midway through the second quarter, moved the ball to DeMatha's 31 late in the third quarter, but Tom O'Keefe came up two inches short on a fourth-and-three play.

The Stags had two long drives and an interception return to take their 19-13 halftime lead. Gonzaga refused to fold as O'Keefe, a senior quarterback, threw for two touchdowns.

DeMatha scored on its first drive of the half, going 93 yards on 14 plays. Bryce Bevill, Redd, and Phil Bryant combined for 13 rushes and 83 yards. Redd ran the last three times for nine yards, including a 2-yard scoring run with 5:29 left in the first quarter.

The Eagles tied it early in the second quarter when O'Keefe capped a 59-yard drive with a 14-yard scoring pass across the middle to Creighton Armstrong.

On their next possession, the Stags went back ahead on Redd's six-yard run around left end. It was a seven-play, 80-yard drive, keyed by Tracy Bergan's 35-yard pass to Jeff Gallman to Gonzaga's 42.

DeMatha's Bubba Chroniger made it 19-7 just 37 seconds later when he intercepted a Gregory Lilly pass and returned it 28 yards untouched. The two-point conversion attempt failed. Gonzaga (4-2) 0 13 0 0 13 DeMatha (6-0) 7 12 0 0 19
