COLUMBIA, S.C., OCT. 10 -- Receiver Sterling Sharpe turned runner yesterday, scoring three touchdowns, and Todd Ellis passed for 334 yards to lead South Carolina to a 40-10 victory over Virginia Tech.

Freshman Collin Mackie kicked four second-half field goals of 27, 22, 30, and 31 yards to tie a school record as the Gamecocks (3-2) snapped a two-game losing streak. Virginia Tech dropped to 1-4.

South Carolina dominated most of the contest, with Tech scoring its only points after recovering a pair of fumbles by Ellis in the second period.

Sharpe, running out of the I-formation for the first time, scored on a pair of three-yard runs in the first half and had a 17-yard scoring run in the final quarter that gave the Gamecocks a 37-10 lead.

Ellis lost three fumbles in the first half, but completed 25 of 41 passes and topped the 300-yard mark for the third time this season.

The Gamecocks jumped to a 14-0 lead on a 20-yard pass from Ellis to Ryan Bethea and Sharpe's three-yard dash, which climaxed a 71-yard drive.

After taking possession at the South Carolina 42 following an Ellis fumble, the Hokies moved down in eight plays for their only touchdown. Earnie Jones got the score on a four-yard run to narrow the lead to 14-7.

The Gamecocks then moved 71 yards in nine plays behind the passing of Ellis, with Sharpe going the final three yards for the score. Tech narrowed the margin to 21-10 on Chris Kinzer's 19-yard field goal on the final play of the first half.

South Carolina had four long drives stall inside the Tech 20 in the second half but Mackie connected on all four field goal attempts and finished with a school kicking record of 16 points in one game.

The Gamecocks got their final touchdown with 10 minutes left on Sharpe's 17-yard sweep around left end.

The Hokies missed a couple of scoring opportunities when Kinzer missed a 52-yard field goal try in the first quarter and a 50-yard attempt midway through the third period. Va. Tech 00 10 00 00 10 S. Carolina 14 07 06 13 40
