Georgetown Prep's winning streak is intact, but it took a deflection of a two-point conversion pass with less than two and a half minutes to play yesterday to extend the Little Hoyas' streak to 18 games.
Linebacker Chris Roa batted down Mike McMillan's pass and Georgetown Prep had a 21-20 victory over visiting McDonogh of Baltimore.
The win was the fifth this season for the eighth-ranked Little Hoyas, who dealt McDonogh its first loss after six victories.
The teams had traded early touchdowns, as the Little Hoyas' Mike Green went over from the 2 following David Flynn's punt block and the Eagles responded with a 21-yard touchdown pass from McMillan to Jamie Weaver. However, McDonogh's Stan Dorsey had his extra-point kick blocked and the Hoyas led, 7-6.
After a stalled Eagles drive, the Little Hoyas drove for another score. A 15-yard pass from Marc Richards to Brian Haley set up Green's second touchdown, a three-yard run over left tackle with four seconds left in the first period for a 14-6 lead.
Georgetown Prep appeared to be headed for another touchdown near the end of the half, but Jim McBride intercepted at the McDonogh 5 with 1:30 to play.
The Little Hoyas made another mistake on the first play from scrimmage in the second half, when Larry Chang picked off a deflected pass at the Little Hoyas' 30. On fourth and three from the 12, Navid Lotfi broke up the middle for a touchdown. McMillan then hit York Eggelston in the right corner of the end zone for the game-tying two-point conversion.
Georgetown Prep had a chance to go ahead late in the third quarter when Tripp Shreeves lined up for a 46-yard field goal attempt, but a delay of game penalty took the Little Hoyas out of field goal range.
Midway through the fourth quarter, the Little Hoyas' David Isaac picked off McMillan's pass and returned it 33 yards to the Eagles 14. Two plays later, Gary Scruggs went 13 yards up the middle for the score.
But McDonogh responded with a long drive, converting three third downs in a row, including a 6-yard reception by Damon Young that was followed by a late hit by the Little Hoyas' Ed Sullivan, moving the ball to the 14. Two plays later, Dorsey caught a pass at the 5 and bulled his way into the end zone to cut the Little Hoyas' lead to 21-20.
"The kids wanted to go for it," said McDonogh Coach Mike McMillan. "With two minutes left I wasn't sure, but they wanted the win."
"We made a couple of mistakes, but they made mistakes, too," said Little Hoyas Coach Jim Fegan. "But for the most part we capitalized on our breaks." McDonogh (6-1)/6/0/8/6/20/ Georgetown Prep (5-0)/7/7/0/7/21
