For a second straight week, Gonzaga was within seconds of upsetting a rival Metro Conference team. And for a second straight week, the Purple Eagles came away frustrated.

Sixth-ranked Carroll stung the visitors with a flea-flicker play that set up a one-yard touchdown run by Richard Dickens with about a minute left and the Lions held on for a dramatic, 18-13 triumph yesterday.

Gonzaga, which has lost consecutive games to McNamara (16-6), DeMatha (19-13) and Carroll to fall to 0-3 in the conference and 4-3 overall, moved ahead, 13-12, on Chris Brown's second one-yard scoring run on the final play of the third quarter.

Carroll drove to the Eagles 4 onon the ensuing possession, but a 20-yard field goal try by Jason Francella was no good. Gonzaga ran off two minutes before a 53-yard punt by Colin Kaiser fell dead at the Lions 19.

But as they have done so many times, the Lions came up with the big play. On first down, the flea-flicker worked for 38 yards as end Lawrence Moten leaped in the air to grab Marvin Graves' short, wobbly pass.

"The play is designed for the touchdown but the ball was a little short," said Moten, who also had a 44-yard touchdown reception that cut Gonzaga's early lead to 7-6. "I stopped running, came back and just jumped for the ball."

From the Gonzaga 43, Dickens (94 yards on 15 carries) had runs of five and 21 yards to help his team reach the Eagles 5. Three running plays pushed the ball to the 1. Dickens then got the call on a fourth-down sweep to his right. Gonzaga safety Tom O'Keefe hit Dickens with a good shoulder tackle, but the 6-foot runner dove high and rolled into the end zone for the six points.

"I saw him go low to hit me and I went over the top," Dickens said. "The line did some marvelous blocking and I knew I had to get in."Gonzaga (4-3) 0 7 6 0 13 Carroll (6-1) 0 0 12 6 18
