Larry Holmes ran for 273 yards and touchdowns of 76, 70 and 45 yards yesterday to lead St. Albans to a 28-22 Interstate Athletic Conference victory over visiting St. Stephen's.
Only a sophomore, Holmes also recovered a key fourth-quarter fumble and saved an extra point. He played every down of the game.
In a game that featured 671 rushing yards -- 371 by St. Albans (4-2 overall, 2-2 in IAC play) and 300 by St. Stephen's (3-4, 1-2) -- Holmes didn't wait long to get started, as he broke a tackle and sprinted down the right sideline for a 76-yard touchdown on the third play of the game.
St. Stephen's came back in the second period, sparked by quarterback Pat Dyson. He scrambled for 17 yards and, two plays later, went 27 on an option play. The two runs put the Saints in field-goal range, and Gary Gardiner's 31-yard kick made it 7-3.
Moments later, on a third-and-seven play, Holmes broke a tackle short of a first down and shook off two more would-be tacklers en route to a 70-yard touchdown run. St. Albans led, 14-3, with 6:10 left in the half.
The Saints wasted no time making up the touchdown, as fullback Gant Randolph broke a 37-yard run up the middle, then went 11 yards on the next play to the St. Albans 1 to set up Dyson's touchdown run. Randolph carried 20 times for 162 yards for the Saints.
With eight minutes left in the third quarter, Tim Bagley's short punt gave the ball to the Bulldogs on the Saints' 48. On third and seven, Holmes ran 45 yards for his third score and a 21-10 lead.
The Saints cut the lead again with 11:25 left in the game, when Dyson hit Tom Whitworth for an 11-yard touchdown, but the two-point conversion attempt failed.
Steve Pierson ran 11 yards for St. Albans' touchdown. St. Stephen's
