ARNOLD, MD., OCT. 23 -- In a game between two neighborhood teams with first place at stake, unbeaten Severna Park's big plays were the difference tonight as the 16th-ranked Falcons beat Broadneck, 20-6, at Broadneck to remain atop the Anne Arundel AA standings.
Severna Park (8-0, 5-0 in the league) and Broadneck (6-2, 4-2), had never met. But most of the players from the two teams grew up together and more than first place was at stake in the game; bragging rights were also on the line.
"We all grew up around here," said Severna Park quarterback Kevin Hetrick, who completed five of nine passes for 159 yards and two touchdowns. "A lot of us play football together, so we were really pumped to win. We came out looking to take control."
Severna Park established its explosiveness on offense and aggressiveness on defense early. Midway through the first quarter, the Falcons scored on a 59-yard touchdown pass from Hetrick to Jeff Kreis.
The Bruins, however, didn't let Severna Park run away with the game. In the second quarter, Broadneck moved inside the Falcons 10 behind the running of Glenn Adams. A few plays later, Adams sprinted in from four yards out to tie the game, 6-6.
Shortly before the half, Hetrick connected with Kreis on a 65-yard touchdown pass and Gerald Wrenn ran in the conversion to make it 14-6.
In the second half, Severna Park dominated time of possession, utilizing the power running of Aaron Bowman (141 yards on 24 carries).Severna Park (8-0)
