Camtastic moved a stride closer to being named harness racing's 2-year-old colt pacer of the year by winning the $623,912 Breeders Crown at Rosecroft Raceway last night.
The winning time of 1:56 2/5 was a Rosecroft track record for 2-year-old pacing colts. The old mark of 1:56 4/5 was set by Robust Hanover in the 1985 Breeders Crown race.
Last night's Breeders Crown final had a surprising start as Ever So Rich, winner of the first elimination in 1:59, moved out quickly off the rail to get the lead. That forced Bill O'Donnell and Camtastic, who won the second elimination in 1:59 2/5, to pull back on the rail in third.
Just outside Ever So Rich was Even Odds, driven by Ben Webster. The pacesetters rolled to the first quarter in a fast 28 seconds.
But Camtastic, trained by Robert Bencal, blew by the leaders to take the lead after a half-mile, reached in :58 1/5.
Camtastic began to draw away from the field, pacing the three-quarters in 1:27 3/5.
At the wire, Camtastic was a 5 3/4-length winner over Nuclear Nightmare, driven by Buddy Gilmour. Even Odds held on for third and Ever So Rich faded to fourth.
Camtastic's rally at the half didn't surprise driver O'Donnell. "I hoped that Even Odds would be getting tired after the big move so that I would be able to get the lead," he said.
For O'Donnell, the Breeders Crown victory was his sixth in the four-year history of the series.
Camtastic's dual victories earned the colt $272,961 and increased his lifetime earning to $598,579. He paid $2.40 to win.
Tonight, harness racing's top 3-year-old trotters, Rosecroft record-holder Mack Lobell and Napoletano, will compete in the $142,455 Colonial Trot.
