Seventh-ranked Georgetown Prep got a pair of field goals from Tripp Shreves and another fine defensive effort to defeat St. Albans, 13-3, and stretch its winning streak to 20 consecutive games in an Interstate Athletic Conference contest at St. Albans.
Coach Jim Fegan said St. Albans (4-3, 2-3 in IAC play) gave his Little Hoyas (7-0, 4-0) one of their toughest tests this season. But the Bulldogs couldn't spring loose quick tailback Larry Holmes or get their passing game in gear.
"We tend to bring out the best in people," Fegan said. "St. Albans just never let up, they played us hard and we made a few too many errors. But our defense played very well."
Coach Dick Allanson was pleased with his team's effort, but disappointed the Bulldogs committed six turnovers and had two punts blocked.
"They have lived off that -- taking advantage of your turnovers," Allanson said. "We played them as hard as we could with what we have. But we just lost the ball too many times."
Determined St. Albans stopped the Little Hoyas for 1 1/2 periods before a fumble by quarterback Jeremy Burden led to the game's lone touchdown. In Burden's defense, 6-foot-4, 220-pound tackle David Flynn broke free and hit him from behind, forcing the fumble. Georgetown Prep's Brian Ridgeway fell on the ball at the Bulldogs 27.
Five running plays later, Gary Scruggs scored from two yards out. Shreves' kick made it 7-0 with 6:44 left in the first half.
St. Albans then had its best drive, moving from its 31 to the Georgetown Prep 12. But the Little Hoyas, who have allowed only nine touchdowns in their last 16 games, held and Jason Glenn kicked a 28-yard field goal to cut the deficit to 7-3 at intermission.
St. Albans continued to play good defense in the second half but could not move offensively, managing only 38 total yards.
Scott Schoeb's fourth-quarter interception gave Georgetown Prep the ball on the St. Albans 18. Four plays later, Shreves, who missed a 48-yard field-goal attempt in the third period, made a 30-yard attempt to make it 10-3 with 10 minutes to play. He added a 35-yard kick later.Georgetown Prep (7-0) 0 7 0 6 13 St. Albans (4-3) 0 3 0 0 3
