Just prior to his team's Prince George's AB League contest with DuVal yesterday, Forestville Coach Eric Knight told his Knights they needed to accomplish three objectives to win and keep their playoff hopes alive.
"We can't fumble, we can't have stupid penalties and we have to be able to establish a running game," Knight said.
Well, Forestville managed to accomplish one of Knight's goals, as running back Rico Marshall gained 143 yards rushing and scored a touchdown on 27 carries. And that helped offset three fumbles and 18 penalties as the Knights won, 20-12.
The win moves Forestville (7-2, 5-2 in AB play) into sole possession of second place in the league and keeps the Knights' Maryland Class B state playoff hopes alive.
"It's tough to stay in a game when you have 18 penalties," Knight said. "But the defense played their tails off and allowed our offense a couple of chances to score."
DuVal (6-3, 5-3) took an early lead when quarterback Isaac Johnson sprinted around right end from 10 yards out for the game's first score. A conversion pass failed and DuVal led, 6-0.
Midway through the second period, Forestville quarterback Marquis Harper passed 19 yards to split end Chris White in the left corner of the end zone for Forestville's first touchdown. Leslie Shepherd's extra point made it 7-6.
In the third quarter, Harper threw a 22-yard touchdown pass to Shepherd, who outjumped a defender at the goal line. Shepherd's extra-point kick made it 14-6.Forestville (7-2) 0 7 7 6 20 DuVal (6-3) 6 0 0 6 12
