Sixth-ranked Carroll needed a 21-point third quarter to turn back upset-minded St. John's, 29-10, in a Metro Conference game yesterday at St. John's.
Carroll is now 8-1 overall and 4-0 in league play. The Lions are now in first place in the Metro Conference, one-half game ahead of DeMatha, which tied McNamara yesterday, 14-14. Carroll will host DeMatha on Nov. 14 to decide the league title.
St. John's, which dropped from title contention with this loss, is 5-3 overall and 2-2 in the Metro Conference.
The first 1 1/2 quarters belonged to the Cadets who raced to a 10-0 lead on quarterback Tom Mullikin's 48-yard touchdown run and a 44-yard field goal by Nick Jenkins.
Carroll's Marvin Graves then threw deep to wide receiver Sven Braithwaite, who caught the ball in full stride and raced down the right sideline for a 64-yard completion to the Cadets 23.
Orin Solomon, Carroll's usual starting quarterback before suffering a sprained shoulder several weeks ago, continued his recovery at wingback where he followed the blocking of tight end Eric Hill for runs of 17 and six yards, the latter for the Lions' first touchdown. Graves passed to Hill for a two-point conversion and Carroll trailed, 10-8, with 4:56 left in the first half.
Carroll all-purpose running back Richard Dickens didn't score yesterday, but managed 11 rushes for 147 yards and four pass receptions for 72 yards, to key the Lions' scoring in the third quarter. Dickens has now rushed for 1,117 yards in eight games.
Dickens' 37-yard pass reception on Carroll's first possession of the second half set up Solomon's second touchdown run, a 31-yard counter, that put the Lions ahead to stay. Solomon also caught a conversion pass from Graves for a 16-10 lead.Carroll (8-1) 0 8 21 0 29 St. John's (5-3) 7 3 0 0 10
