DeMatha's Donald Moore missed a 30-yard field-goal attempt with 36 seconds left and the third-ranked Stags had to settle for a 14-14 tie with 19th-ranked McNamara in a Metro Conference game yesterday at McNamara.
DeMatha came into the game with an 18-game winning streak and a defense that had shut out its opponents in the last six quarters. McNamara had lost two in a row and had not scored a touchdown in either loss.
The Mustangs wasted no time scoring. They came out throwing on their first possession as the combination of quarterback Chris Auth and tight end Steve Busky set up an interference call that gave McNamara a first down at midfield. Auth found Busky across the middle for a 22-yard gain and another first down and ended the seven-play, 63-yard drive with an 18-yard touchdown pass to Busky with two defenders hanging on him for a 7-0 lead.
"Our game plan was to try to throw short hook patterns hoping to loosen them up for long passes," says Auth. "We went to the short side of the field in certain situations trying to catch them overloading one side of the field depending on what hashmarks the ball was on."
Busky, from his defensive end position, came up with another big play with 11:24 left in the second quarter as Stags running back Dwayne Redd, trying to gain additional yardage up the middle, was stripped of the ball. Busky scooped it up in stride and raced 36 yards for a touchdown to give the Mustangs a 14-0 lead.
DeMatha answered on its next possession as sophomore running back Bryce Bevill raced 84 yards around right end to bring DeMatha within 14-7.
The Stags threatened on their next possession. Quarterback Tracy Bergan completed a 21-yard pass to 6-foot-5, 250-pound tight end Jeff Gallman, and a 27-yard run by Bevill (seven carries, 126 yards) gave the Stags a first down at the Mustangs 13. But a fourth-down pass was batted down in the end zone by David McNeil, ending the drive.
DeMatha's defensive front, led by Garland Hawkins, Don Davis, and Brian Murray, had stuffed McNamara's rushers all day but couldn't get to Auth until late in the third quarter. That's when Auth, under a heavy rush, overthrew his receiver and was intercepted by cornerback Melvin Muir at the Mustangs 27.
Redd carried on the next three plays, resulting in a 12-yard touchdown run to tie the score at 14. DeMatha (8-0-1) 0 7 7 0 14 McNamara (6-2-1) 7 7 0 0 14
