Angered by comments by former Oxon Hill players, the ninth-ranked Clippers came out in the second half and pushed across three touchdowns on consecutive possessions to turn away 13th-ranked Bowie, 28-10, in a key Prince George's AA League game yesterday at Oxon Hill.

Clippers tailback Darren Huckaby scored on runs of two and one yards and Tim Jones scored on a 13-yard run to wipe out Bowie's 10-6 first-half lead and put the hosts (8-1 overall, 7-1 in the league) in first place in the Maryland Class AA Region III standings, a precious few points ahead of the Bulldogs (also 8-1, 7-1) with one game to play.

Oxon Hill closes out the regular season against High Point while Bowie faces winless Parkdale next week.

Oxon Hill struck early as Kenny Ford dashed 81 yards on the first play from scrimmage for a 6-0 lead.

But for the remainder of the first half, the Clippers played the self-destructive style of football that drives coaches crazy. Penalties, mental mistakes and over-aggressiveness led to a 23-yard field goal by Mark Fitzpatrick and a 58-yard touchdown pass play from Mike Young to end Alan Hansen for the 10-6 lead.

But a large homecoming crowd saw a different Clippers team in the second half.

"I'll tell you what happened," Clippers offensive guard Ted Adams said. "Some alumni were standing around saying our team had no pride. That made us mad when we left the field {at intermission}. We didn't need any pep talk. We got together and decided to show everyone we do have pride. No one was going to say that about us."

After stopping Bowie on its initial second half possession, Adams and his inspired cohorts up front began opening big holes for the backs. An 11-play drive, 10 of them running plays, ended when Huckaby ran over from two yards out. Jones ran over the two-point conversion and Oxon Hill was on top, 14-10.

Two plays later, Oxon Hill had the ball again as Paul Garrett intercepted a deflected pass at the Bowie 39.

Jones capped the quick, four-play drive with a tackle-breaking 13-yard run.

Todd Mizukawa scored the two-point conversion for a 22-10 lead with seven seconds elapsed in the final period.

"We felt we could run when we wanted to but we kept making simple mistakes," Oxon Hill Coach Mike Pearson said.

"The kids got miffed when some alumni said they didn't have much pride. We just went back to basics and ran the ball right at Bowie."

The Bulldogs seemed to lose a bit of their early intensity.

The offense could produce only 54 total second-half yards and the defense was now having problems stopping the Clippers' arsenal of traps and counter plays.

Even Oxon Hill special teams, which were burned for two long punt returns and lost the ball on an onside kick, blocked two fourth-quarter punts, the first one by Justin Kennedy, to set up his team's final score. Bowie (8-1) 3 7 0 0 10 Oxon Hill (8-1) 6 0 8 14 28
