Springbrook's defense allowed just 17 yards and one first down in the second half as the Blue Devils defeated Gaithersburg, 14-7, in a Montgomery AA Division I game yesterday at Gaithersburg.

The 11th-ranked Blue Devils improved to 8-1 and can gain a top seed in the state playoffs by defeating Churchill next Friday. Gaithersburg, the defending AA champions fell to 5-4.

Springbrook's defense was in charge for virtually the entire game. The Trojans could gain just 97 total yards, all in the air. Sixty of those yards came on four consecutive completions that set up Gaithersburg's lone score in the second quarter.

"Our defense has been working real hard and they played very well today," said Springbrook Coach Bob Milloy. "We were embarrassed defensively against Seneca Valley and Wootton and we needed to play better. We've had nine defensive position changes since we played Seneca four weeks ago."

The changes have apparently worked. Gaithersburg had four straight three-plays-and-punt sequences in the second half before getting its initial first down with just 22 seconds to play. The Trojans had minus 13 yards rushing and never got past their 35 in the second half.

Springbrook got two breaks en route to its first touchdown. The Blue Devils' first drive was apparently stopped on third down but a face-mask penalty gave them a first down at the Trojans 7. On the next play, Dino Sclavounos broke a tackle at the line and headed for the end zone. Hit at the goal line, he fumbled, but offensive lineman Mike Wnek fell on the ball in the end zone.

After taking a Gaithersburg punt on the Trojans 48, Springbrook used 12 plays to score, with Sclavounos diving into the end zone.

Gaithersburg's offense finally got started after Derrick Hackey got the first of his two interceptions at the Trojans 39. Quarterback Jason Crawford then completed four consecutive passes, the fourth a 22-yarder to Dave Ethridge at the Blue Devils 1. On the next play, Van Chatman scored and it was 14-7.
