FOXBORO, MASS., NOV. 1 -- When kicker Tony Franklin got a second chance, New England got a last-second victory.

His fourth field goal, a 29-yarder with one second remaining, gave the Patriots a 26-23 victory and spoiled a Los Angeles Raiders' comeback and Bo Jackson's NFL debut today.

Franklin's 34-yard miss with five seconds left was nullified by an offside call against cornerback Lionel Washington. With backup holder Tom Ramsey taking the snap because of an injury to Tony Eason, Franklin hit the game-winner.

"I was trying to anticipate the snap," Washington said. "I thought I had lined up far enough back but apparently I didn't."

Quarterback Steve Grogan, who replaced Eason in the first quarter, had moved the Patriots from their 20-yard line in the final 46 seconds to set up the victory.

The Raiders had rallied from a 23-6 deficit with 17 points in the final 12 minutes. Chris Bahr's third field goal, a 39-yarder, had tied the score with 46 seconds remaining.

After Bahr's tying field goal, the Patriots (4-3) started from their 20. Grogan marched them to the Los Angeles 24 with three completions, then carried seven yards to the 17 to set up Franklin's kicks.

Jackson, the Kansas City Royals outfielder and former Heisman Trophy winner, entered the game early in the second quarter and rushed eight times for 37 yards.

Grogan played the rest of the game after Eason suffered a separated right shoulder when he was tackled with 5:02 left in the first quarter.

Without Eason, who is expected to be sidelined for the rest of the season, Grogan completed 14 of 27 passes for 282 yards, including 56 on the decisive drive. L.A. Raiders 3 3 0 17 23 New England 3 7 6 10 26 First Quarter
