Gregory Graves ran four yards for a touchdown in overtime to give Eastern a 12-9 victory over Anacostia yesterday and sole possession of second place in the Interhigh League East Division.

Eastern (5-3, 4-1 in league play) must defeat H.D. Woodson next week to create a tie in the division and force a one-game playoff Nov. 21.

Anacostia (3-6, 3-2) took a 9-6 lead in overtime when Jermaine Lindsay kicked a 30-yard field goal on a fourth-down play.

Anacostia thought it had the game won in overtime when defensive back Andre Powell intercepted a pass from Carlton Ford intended for Muhammad Sabur. However, a pass interference penalty was called, giving Eastern the ball at the 4. Graves scored on the next play.

"He hit me on the tight end pop," said Sabur. "I was on my way to catching the pass when he hit me."

Graves rushed for 50 yards on 14 carries and sent the game into overtime when he scored on a three-yard run in the fourth quarter to tie the game, 6-6.

Graves' touchdown in regulation came when he leaped over the defensive line into the end zone with less than four minutes remaining. He set up the touchdown when he returned a low punt to the Anacostia 11. He scored three plays later.

The Indians scored on their fourth possession of the contest, when Randall Stroman threw a 14-yard pass to Derrick Holmes. Eastern (5-3) 0 0 0 6 6 12 Anacostia (3-6) 6 0 0 0 3 9

The Clerks held on to defeat Interhigh West rival Theodore Roosevelt at Cardozo.

Cardozo quarterback Allen Johnson opened the scoring when he avoided a heavy rush by rolling left and threw a nine-yard touchdown pass to Jerome Crawford.

"We wanted to establish the run a little more," Cardozo Coach Robert Richards said in reference to yesterday's windy conditions.

Frank Hardison led Cardozo with 62 yards on 11 carries.

A Roosevelt punt that went minus-six yards gave the Clerks the ball on the Rough Riders 38. Five plays later, Johnson threw a 23-yard pass to Arthur Scales for a touchdown to put Cardozo up, 12-0.

With 54 seconds left in the half, Johnson connected with Crawford again, putting the Clerks ahead 20-0.
