Oakland Mills quarterback Marcus Lewis passed for the game's only touchdown and kicked a 25-yard field goal late to help the Scorpions defeat host Wilde Lake, 10-0, yesterday for the Howard County football championship at Wilde Lake.

Despite the victory, Oakland Mills (7-3, 6-1 in the county) will not advance to the state playoffs because it does not have enough state points. But the Scorpions did end a three-year scoreless streak against Wilde Lake.

And they did it with a balanced attack. Lewis did his part, connecting with running back Andre Vaughn (16 carries for 62 yards) for a 50-yard touchdown pass down the right sideline in the first quarter and kicking the conversion for a 7-0 lead that appeared in jeopardy much of the second half.

Wilde Lake (5-5, 5-4) keyed on Vaughn in the first half, holding him to 27 yards on nine carries. But he helped keep sluggish Oakland Mills going after intermission with short runs to help sustain drives and keep the Wildecats out of good field position.

Wilde Lake had several chances to score, but drives were killed by penalties or overthrown passes by quarterback Sherrod Jenkins. Lewis intercepted two passes in the fourth quarter.

"They {the coaches} were telling me to stay back and stay to the right side, because {Wilde Lake receiver Aaron Bates} was who they were going to," said Lewis, who also recovered a fumble.

Lewis' first interception helped set up the drive to his field goal, which consumed nearly five minutes. The possession was aided by a Wilde Lake personal foul that gave the Scorpions a first down at the Wildecats' 11, and five plays later Lewis added the title-clinching kick with 1:50 left in the game.
