Top-ranked T.C. Williams rushed for 326 yards and defensive ends Lawrence Morgan and DeWayne Evans had two sacks each as the Titans routed Oakton, 35-0, in a Virginia AAA Northern District game yesterday at T.C. Williams.
The win gave the Titans (9-0, 5-0) their sixth straight outright Northern District title. In Glenn Furman's six years as head coach, Williams is 28-0-2 in district contests.
"This was a good 3-6 team," Furman said of Oakton. "Their worst loss in the district was 14-3 to Woodson. But our offensive line was tremendous and our defensive ends did a good job of containing their quarterback."
Lydell Scott and Jay Carr each rushed for more than 100 yards, and the Titans' defense recorded its fifth shutout. Scott, who finished with 120 yards, scored from two yards out to give T.C. Williams a 7-0 lead with 42 seconds left in the opening quarter.
On Oakton's next series, Morgan sacked Sergio Spitale for a 12-yard loss and Eric Parvin shanked a punt, giving T.C. Williams a first down at the Cougars 24. Quarterback Ricky Marrow hit Erik Anderson with a 24-yard scoring strike on the next play for a 14-0 lead. Later in the half, Kevin Brim's seven-yard score gave T.C. Williams a 21-0 lead.
Carr, who gained 135 yards on 16 carries, scored on runs of 43 and two yards in the second half.
Oakton gained only 107 yards, and 43 yards came on Spitale's pass to Roland Calvert in the game's opening series. Calvert's reception gave Oakton its best scoring chance of the game, but it ended four plays later when Russell Brooks came up one yard short of a first down at the T.C. Williams 21.
Oakton's Spitale was sacked five times and completed just two of seven passes for 50 yards. Cougars running back Kevin Barnes, who was averaging 108 yards, was held to 55 on 15 attempts. Oakton (3-6) 0 0 0 0 0 T.C. Williams (9-0)
