Wednesday's snowstorm has forced the postponement of today's scheduled Maryland state high school football playoffs and Virginia AAA field hockey semifinals and has left in doubt the Maryland state soccer semifinals.

The fate of the Metro Conference football championship game between Carroll and DeMatha is also to be determined. The game, originally scheduled for Saturday at Carroll, has been postponed and officials are still deciding on when and where to play the game.

Interhigh League football games scheduled for today and Saturday will be played Monday.

The Maryland state cross country championships scheduled for Saturday at Hereford High School may be postponed until next week.

Many other regular season football games scheduled for Saturday also are in doubt. Those games postponed Saturday likely will be made up Monday.

Maryland officials will decide this morning whether to play the state soccer semifinals tonight. Among the contests scheduled tonight are the Bethesda-Chevy Chase vs. Bowie and Dulaney vs. Arundel Class AA contests at Arundel High School, and the Class A game between Laurel and South River at North Carroll.

Maryland Class AA quarterfinal football games scheduled for tonight have been put off and a decision will be made later today on whether to try to make up the games Saturday. Those games are Friendly at Seneca Valley and Annapolis at Severna Park.

Some of Saturday's games have already been shifted.

The Class AA game between Oxon Hill and Bowie will be played Monday night at 7 at Friendly and the Class A game between Laurel and Thomas Stone will be played Monday at High Point at 7.

The Virginia AAA field hockey semifinals have been pushed back a day to Saturday at Langley High School.

In semifinals, West Potomac will play Midlothian at 1 and Kempsville will face Albermarle at 3. The finals will be Monday at a site and time to be announced.

Interhigh officials have moved all their football games to Monday at 2 p.m., with both East and West Division titles still to be decided. H.D. Woodson hosts Eastern with the winner taking the East title. Cardozo and Coolidge are tied in the West. Coolidge needs a win at home over McKinley to win the division and advance to the Interhigh championship game. Coolidge would earn the right to play in the Thanksgiving game at Howard University by virtue of its victory over Cardozo.

In Virginia, a limited number of football games had been scheduled for this weekend. As of last night, three games had been moved from tonight to Saturday afternoon: Washington-Lee at Fairfax, Falls Church at Edison and West Potomac at Annandale.

However, only one game, Herndon at South Lakes, is still definitely on for tonight. South Lakes needs a victory to qualify for the Virginia state AAA playoffs that begin next weekend. A decision on the remaining games will be made by athletic directors this morning.

The Virginia AA playoffs are still scheduled to begin tonight, with Park View playing at Charlottesville in a Division 4, Region 2 game.
