The Maryland state football playoffs finally get underway for area teams today, but most games won't be played until Monday. Three area teams will play this afternoon in an abbreviated schedule that has been altered because of Wednesday's snowstorm.

Meanwhile, the Maryland state and IAC cross country championships will go on as scheduled today as well as the Virginia AAA semifinal field hockey playoffs and a handful of Northern Virginia and private school football contests.

In the key Maryland football game today, Springbrook, seeded third in the eight-team Class AA playoffs, will host Meade at 1 in a quarterfinal game. In Class A, Lackey will play Fort Hill at White Plains at 2, and in Class B, Damascus will host Walkersville at 1.

In Class AA quarterfinal games Monday, Severna Park will host Annapolis at 7, Bowie and Oxon Hill will play at Friendly at 7 and Seneca Valley hosts Friendly at 7:30.

In Class A Monday, Laurel plays Thomas Stone at High Point at 7 and Class B rivals Fairmont Heights and Forestville play at Fairmont at 2:30.

The Metro Conference showdown between Carroll and DeMatha has been rescheduled for Sunday at 1:30 at Carroll. Other top prep games include Gonzaga versus St. John's, which will be played today at 1:30 at Catholic University. And Georgetown Prep goes for its 22nd straight victory today at 1 at Bullis.

Today, the Maryland Class AA, A, B and C cross country races will be held at Hereford High School and the IAC meet is at Georgetown Prep. Both events begin at 11 a.m.
