WHITE PLAINS, MD., NOV. 14 -- Fort Hill's Craig Schisler threw a 10-yard touchdown pass to a wide-open Todd Foote in overtime today to give the Sentinels an 18-12 victory over Lackey in a Maryland Class A state quarterfinal at White Plains Regional Park.
After being able to practice only sparingly last week because of the unexpected snowfall, both teams asserted great efforts on defense. For Lackey (9-2), the defending Class B state champions, it was a bizarre call plus a key turnover that led to the end of its season.
Early in the second quarter, with the game still scoreless, Lackey quarterback Jay Drews scored on an apparent 26-yard run off a fake handoff to halfback Keith Thomas. But a whistle by the referee who thought Thomas was carrying the ball called the touchdown back.
On fourth and goal in overtime, Drews' pass in the end zone was intercepted by Chris Grapes, allowing the Sentinels (9-1) the opportunity to win.
In the third quarter, Lackey's J.R. Chesley had returned a fumble recovery 70 yards for a touchdown to tie the game at 6-6.
Fort Hill scored its first touchdown 22 seconds before halftime, when Grapes sprinted into the end zone from five yards out to finish off a 13-play, 74-yard drive to put the Sentinels up 6-0.
In the fourth quarter the game's momentum changed several times, with both teams having two opportunites each in the final two minutes to prevent overtime. With 5:43 left in the fourth, Thomas ran it in from one yard out to put the Chargers in front, 12-6, but on the two-point conversion attempt, Drews' pass went incomplete.
Even though mistakes and misfortunes put a end to his team's season, Lackey Coach Mike Brown still saw a bright side. "I am just pleased the way our kids played," said Brown. "Yesterday, we practiced for the first time this week outside, but this was a great game. We played our hearts out.
"After the loss to Thomas Stone last week, I think our kids came out here and showed a lot of character." Fort Hill (9-1) 0 6 0 6 6 18 Lackey (9-2) 0 0 6 6 0 12
