GAMBRILLS, MD., NOV. 16 -- Bowie, trying to become only the third team to win consecutive Maryland AA state soccer titles, advanced to Saturday's championship by defeating B-CC, 1-0, tonight at Arundel High.
The Bulldogs will face Arundel, which defeated Dulaney, 2-1, in the second game tonight.
Arundel (10-3-2), which lost to Rockville, 4-1, in last year's state semifinals, never trailed. The Wildcats' goals were scored by Don Rose at 30:23 and Kevin Marble, with an assist by Rose, at 42:30. Chris Warfel scored for Dulaney (13-1).
The Bulldogs (12-1-1), who have won nine straight since losing to Eleanor Roosevelt early in the season, dominated play and outshot B-CC, 30-17. And it was Dave Kalman's goal at 48:47 that moved Bowie to within one game of the state title.
Eric Stallings, playing on the left wing, set up the goal by feeding Kalman with an excellent cross. Kalman took the ball in the air and headed it, drawing goalie Matt Harrell out of the box. Kalman then headed the ball once more into the open net.
The Barons (11-2-2) almost tied the game twice late in the second half. But Jose Castedo had his shot sail wide right with 2:10 left and Chris Stewart, with only seconds left, missed inches high.
