Marshall quarterback Lonnie Goldberg had a play he knew would work. And when the time came, it went for a 34-yard touchdown pass to Kevin Froelke and did in Edison, 21-6, last night in a Virginia AAA Northern Region Division 5 playoff game at Marshall's Jimmie Miller Stadium.

The Statesmen held rugged Edison to 41 net yards in the second half as they improved to 10-1. Marshall will play at Fairfax next Saturday at 1 p.m. in a regional semifinal.

Edison, which narrowly gained the final regional playoff berth on the basis of tie-breaker points, finished 5-6. The Eagles were the defending state champions at this level.

Fullback Joe Swarm rushed for 93 yards and two touchdowns on 22 carries for Marshall. He scored on a two-yard run with six seconds left in the game.

Goldberg threw for 104 yards and rushed for 49 on three carries for Marshall, which lost in the state semifinals last year. He completed only five of 13 passes, including a seemingly insignificant 11-yarder in the third quarter to halfback Carroll Smith that set the stage for the touchdown pass to Froelke, which gave Marshall a 14-6 lead with 1:00 remaining in the third period.

"We ran the play before and I was wide open, but Lonnie threw it to the back {Smith}," said Froelke, a senior tight end. "He said next time he had a chance, he would go to me. I was so wide open, I was ready to catch it and go home right there."

The game started on a sour note for Edison, which was penalized 15 yards on the opening kickoff for coming out of the locker room late. But Edison refused to be overrun by Marshall's offense, which had averaged 28.7 points during the regular season.

Swarm's five-yard second-quarter touchdown gave Marshall a 7-0 lead. Edison, however, faked a punt on the last play of the half and Antoine Ross ran 86 yards for a touchdown. The Eagles, who had earlier missed two field goals, gambled for a two-point conversion and were stopped.

"The only people who thought we could win this game coming in were us," said Edison Coach Vaughn Lewis. "We made a couple mistakes and it cost us, but I'm real proud of our kids. Marshall is a real good ballclub; I think they should win the region."Edison (5-5) 0 6 0 0 6 Marshall (10-1) 0 7 7 7 21
