Fairfax, playing its first postseason game in the school's 52-year history defeated Yorktown, 19-13, in a Virginia AAA Northern Region Division 5 semifinal game last night at Yorktown.

Fairfax (8-3) will face Marshall next Friday at home.

Fairfax, which lost to Yorktown, 13-3, earlier in the season, ran its halfback option play with continued success. The Rebels also passed long on Yorktown's secondary. Never was that more evident than on the drive that gave Fairfax the lead.

Trailing by 7-3 with 11:10 left in the first half, the Rebels went 80 yards on 16 plays. The key play came on fourth and 11 from the Yorktown 27. Running back Randy Belknap took the handoff from David Bedwell, stopped and then passed to tight end Pete Michaud, who was tackled on the 4-yard line. Three plays later, Bedwell ran it in for the score and a 10-7 lead.

"They gave us the long patterns," said Belknap. "They were trying to play us man to man, but we had success getting by them on the long patterns."

Yorktown (7-4) missed two scoring opportunities in the fourth quarter. Early in the quarter, the Patriots moved the ball to the Fairfax 9, but on first down, quarterback Moe Wright fumbled and the Rebels recovered. Two plays later, Fairfax fumbled on its 13-yard line.

But Yorktown was unable to capitalize. On fourth and five from the 8, Wright's pass to Bill Seymore was broken up by Ronnie Crisostomo and Guy Caron.

The Patriots got one last shot with 1:27 left, but, on first down from their 44, Wright's pass was intercepted by Ted Whitney.

Yorktown scored on its first possession. The Patriots moved the ball 63 yards on five plays. They scored as Stacey Turner caught a four-yard pass from Wright on the Fairfax 45. Wright sidestepped Whitney inside and then turned outside, running untouched for the score. After Fairfax cut it to 7-3 on Rob Menefee's 30-yard field goal, Fairfax took the lead on its big drive.

With Fairfax leading, 10-7, and only 1:23 left on the clock it appeared the Rebels would run out the rest of the half. But after Yorktown called time out with 17 seconds remaining to play, Belknap ran down the left sideline for 25 yards to the Yorktown 48. Several plays later Menefee kicked a 25-yard field goal as time expired. That gave the Rebels a 13-7 halftime lead. Fairfax (8-3) 3 10 6 0 19 Yorktown (7-4) 7 0 6 0 13
