Fairmont Heights advanced to its second state championship game in four years by getting two first-half touchdowns and holding on to defeat previously unbeaten Southern of Garrett County, 14-8, yesterday in a Maryland Class B semifinal at Fairmont Heights.

The Hornets (11-1) will play Walkersville of Frederick County, which defeated James M. Bennett in the other Class B semifinal, next weekend at the University of Maryland. Southern finished 11-1.

The Fairmont Heights' defense was able to control running back J.R. Bosley, who came into the game with more than 1,600 yards rushing and had 97 yards on 26 carries yesterday. Fairmont Heights has given up only 54 points this season.

The Hornets' passing game led to one score and helped set up another, as it exploited Southern's underneath coverage. The first touchdown came on Fairmont Heights' second possession, when quarterback Daniel Taylor hit a wide-open Sterling Mills with a short pass. Mills raced down the left sideline, dodged one tackler and stayed inbounds for the 48-yard score and a 6-0 lead. Eric Myers' conversion attempt was wide left.

"They {Southern} were playing underneath {on the pass}, and I was supposed to follow behind the blocker and work myself open," said Mills, who finished with two receptions for 67 yards.

Taylor found Mills open again in the second quarter for 19 yards and a first down at the Southern 12. On the next play, Jeff Turner (17 carries for 69 yards) ran right for the score and added the two-point conversion run for a 14-0 lead with 1:39 left in the half.

Fairmont Heights appeared headed for another score in the third quarter when Rodney Williams intercepted Zack Gibson's short pass and returned it to the Southern 22. But Fairmont Heights stalled at the 12 when Taylor's end zone pass went through Hardy's hands.

Bosley carried 10 times in Southern's 89-yard, 14-play drive in the third quarter. The drive ended with his two-yard score and conversion run that cut the lead to 14-8 with 41 seconds left in the period.

Southern's final attempt at a touchdown ended with Gibson being sacked inside the Fairmont Heights 40 by Ron Pendergrass and Calvin Graves to run out the clock. Southern (11-1) 0 0 8 0 8 Fairmont Heights (11-1) 6 8 0 0 14
