BLACKSBURG, VA., NOV. 21 -- Freshman Jon Jeffries rushed for 160 yards and two touchdowns today as Virginia Tech held on to defeat Cincinnati, 21-20, in a nonconference game.

Cincinnati rallied with a 20-point fourth period as junior running back Al McKinney ran for touchdowns of one and two yards and senior Danny McCoin hit junior wide receiver Roosevelt Mukes with an 18-yard scoring pass. The Bearcats were left one point behind when McCoin was unable to complete a two-point pass to wide receiver Bill Davis.

Jeffries, from De Matha High School, carried 24 times and scored on runs of three and 42 yards before an announced crowd of 10,600 that braved temperatures in the 20s in snow-speckled Lane Stadium.

McKinney, who led Cincinnati's rushing attack with 142 yards on 30 carries, ran one yard for a touchdown to pull the Bearcats within 14-7 with 13:16 left to play. The Hokies then made it 21-7 on Jeffries' 42-yard touchdown.

McCoin then hit Mukes with an 18-yard pass to make it 21-14 with 7:21 to play before McKinney got the Bearcats their final score.

Virginia Tech finished the season at 2-9 under first-year coach Frank Beamer, the worst Hokies record since the 2-9 finish of 1973. Cincinnati fell to 4-7 with its first loss to Virginia Tech in four meetings. Cincinnati 0 0 0 20 20 Virginia Tech 7 7 0 7 21
