CATONSVILLE, MD., NOV. 21 -- Gretchen and Barbra Stross combined for 10 kills today to lead Wootton over Severna Park, 15-10, in a tie breaker to win its fifth straight Maryland Class AA state volleyball title.
The Stross sisters, both 6-foot-1, left-side hitters, sparked the Patriots (14-1) past top-seeded Severna Park (14-1) in the final after the two squads finished the six-game round robin tournament in a 3-3 tie along with Eleanor Roosevelt.
Senior Jill Moore, who had six kills against the Patriots in the tie breaker, keyed Severna Park's 15-4 victory over Roosevelt (12-2) to earn a spot in the final. Whitman (7-8) finished fourth.
In Class A, Loch Raven (10-2) of Baltimore won the title, with Thomas Stone (13-2) second and Laurel (12-3) third.
Laurel had to win its final two games against Thomas Stone to take the title, but Stone easily won both, 15-3, 15-8, to hand Loch Raven the championship. North Carroll was fourth.
