The outcomes of all-star football games usually depend on outstanding offensive performances, yet yesterday's Metro Conference all-star contest at Good Counsel was decided by pass defense as the White team defeated the Blue, 10-0.
The White team, comprised of players from DeMatha, McNamara, Pallotti, O'Connell, Ireton and Good Counsel, grabbed the early lead when O'Connell's Fred Ensign kicked a 31-yard field goal in the first period and DeMatha's Phil Bryant ran one yard for a touchdown in the second quarter. Ensign's conversion kick closed out the scoring.
The Blue team controlled the ball most of the second half and mounted several rallies, but Carroll quarterback Orin Solomon and his receivers couldn't solve the White's man-to-man pass defense led by Good Counsel's Don Moran, who broke up four passes late in the fourth quarter.
The White squad also missed scoring chances when McNamara's Elbert Ouzts blocked a 40-yard field-goal attempt by St. John's Nick Jenkins with 8:14 left in the game and Gonzaga's Rob Smith missed a 26-yard attempt wide left three minutes later.
The Blue team's final possession ended with an interception by Good Counsel's Brian Houck, on his 30-yard line with 1:40 left to play. White.....3....7....0....0....10 Blue......0....0....0....0.....0
