DAYTON, OHIO, NOV. 28 -- Dave Jones rushed for 219 yards and three touchdowns today as the University of Dayton ended Augustana College's 60-game unbeaten streak with a 38-36 victory in an NCAA Division III quarterfinal playoff game.
Augustana (11-1) of Rock Island, Ill., suffered its first defeat since losing to West Georgia in the 1982 Stagg Bowl for the Division III championship. Augustana, a four-time national champion, was 59-0-1 and this season was ranked No. 1.
But Dayton (10-2) took a 17-0 lead in the second quarter and never trailed.
"We felt comfortable going into the game," said Dayton Coach Mike Kelly. "We thought we could beat them. We knew it would take a great effort, and we got that effort."
Jones, a senior tailback, carried 26 times to anchor a rushing offense that gained 369 yards. Quarterback Kevin Wilhelm had 56 yards on 10 carries and completed seven of 16 passes for 133 yards.
Augustana was led by the passing of Greg Wallace, who completed 13 of 29 passes for 287 yards.
Tim Eubank caught a 50-yard scoring pass from Wilhelm to put Dayton ahead, 38-21, on the first play of the fourth quarter.
