ELIZABETH CITY, N.C., DEC. 5 -- Tim Stanfill scored 19 points coming off the bench as the Firebirds captured the Elizabeth City Invitational tournament tonight over host Elizabeth City, 86-79.

The victory was the fourth consecutive win by the Firebirds over their CIAA rival.

UDC's Richard McLean, who leads the team in rebounding this season, grabbed a game-high 14. Lyndon DeBellotte scored 17 points and had five rebounds to help pace the Firebirds (5-0).

Stanfill, a 6-foot-7 junior forward, hit eight of nine field goal attempts and had nine rebounds.

Stanfill scored 13 first half-points as UDC took a 51-38 halftime advantage.

Elizabeth City's Kevin Dickens kept the Vikings close with three crucial three-point jump shots midway through the second half. The Vikings closed to 57-52 with 15:09 remaining in the half, but couldn't close the gap any further. Elizabeth City (3-1) moved to within 78-72 with just over five minutes remaining.

The Firebirds, however, pulled away as Stanfill scored on two straight dunks to squelch the final Vikings rally.
