EL PASO, DEC. 5 -- Junior guard Tim Hardaway scored 16 points to lead five players in double figures as host University of Texas at El Paso pulled away from Howard University, 73-56, to win the Metro Mobile tournament tonight.

The Miners converted 18 of 22 free throws, and opened a 16-point advantage late in the second half.

Howard senior guard George Hamilton scored 14 of his game-high 18 points in the first half as the teams finished the half tied at 33.

For the game, the Bison committed 11 more personal fouls than the Miners and shot only 38 percent from the field. The Miners shot 45 percent.

The Miners went on a 10-2 run to break open the game after Howard Spencer's jump shot tied the game at 39-39. Bison point guard Chuck Smalley, who had picked up his fourth foul at 17:01 of the second half, fouled out with 7:36 remaining and the Bison never closed within 10 points after that.

Spencer scored 10 first-half points, but was shut out in the second half.

The Miners held a 35-25 rebound advantage for the game. Spencer and Hamilton made the all-tournament team.
