Chuck Smalley threw in an off-balance, 20-foot jump shot at the final buzzer to give Howard University a dramatic 68-66 victory over Baptist College last night before 812 at Burr Gymnasium.

With seven seconds left, Baptist forward Tyrone Talbot went to the free throw line for a one-and-one. He missed the front end and the Bison's Rocky Gholson came down with the rebound. The ball went to Smalley, who raced upcourt, leaned forward and let his shot fly. The ball went through as the buzzer sounded.

The Bison (2-1) hurt themselves by committing 26 turnovers and failing to make key baskets earlier in the game. Led by Oliver Johnson (24 points, 12 rebounds) and Heder Ambrose (19 points, 10 rebounds), Baptist led by 10 points on several occasions before George Hamilton (24 points) got a hot hand.

The senior guard scored 10 of the Bison's final 17 points, including two free throws and a bank shot that cut Baptist's five-point lead to 66-65 with 30 seconds remaining.

The Buccaneers (2-2) tried to stall, but, after a timeout, Talbot was fouled, setting up his one-and-one.

John Spencer had 13 points, 15 rebounds and four blocked shots for Howard, which also got 10 points from Gholson and nine points from Smalley.
