HAGUE, VA., DEC. 19 -- Otis Douglas, a retired professional football player and baseball trainer, was injured Friday night during a robbery at his home, Westmoreland County Sheriff C.W. (Buddy) Jackson said.

Jackson said he was not sure whether Douglas, 76, was shot or cut by glass from doors broken in a struggle during the robbery.

Douglas was taken to Medical College of Virginia Hospitals in Richmond, the sheriff said. A hospital spokesman said Douglas was in serious but stable condition today.

Jackson said Calvin Ashton of the nearby Mount Holly community has been arrested and charged with robbery and using a firearm in a felony. The sheriff withheld information about the type of gun Ashton allegedly was carrying.

Ashton, described as in his 20s, was being held in the Westmoreland County jail.

Jackson said details were sketchy this morning and that his investigation is continuing.

A man apparently broke into the Douglas home about 6 p.m. demanding money, Jackson said. The sheriff said the man apparently was alone.

A native of Reedville in Northumberland County, Douglas was a star tackle at William and Mary and is a member of the college's sports hall of fame.

He played professionally for the Philadelpha Eagles from 1946 to 1949.

He was head football coach at the University of Arkansas for two years before joining the Baltimore Colts coaching staff in 1953. He later coached at Villanova and served as a scout for the Minnesota Vikings.

He was a trainer for the Cincinnati Reds baseball team when it won the National League pennant in 1961.
