ANAHEIM, CALIF., DEC. 21 -- Roger Ruzek kicked five field goals and Steve Pelluer threw for 183 yards and a touchdown tonight, helping the Dallas Cowboys eliminate the Los Angeles Rams from playoff competition, 29-21.
At 6-8, the Cowboys won't be in the playoffs, either -- for the second straight year. The Rams, who had won five straight, are 6-8, too.
No Cowboys player ever had kicked more than four field goals in a game. Ruzek did four once earlier this year, and so did three earlier Cowboys. He was five for five tonight. This season, he has succeeded on 22 of 25 tries, which is 88 percent. The Cowboys team record for a full season is Rafael Septien's .815 in 1983.
Pelluer's statistics going into the game were a lot different. He was 1-9 as a starter. But tonight he completed 15 of 30 passes and threw no interceptions. He got his touchdown on a 27-yard pass to Doug Cosbie in the third quarter.
Herschel Walker, who rushed 108 yards for the Cowboys, scored on a one-yard scoring run. Teammate Tony Dorsett gained 52 yards for a career total of 12,036.
Jim Everett scored on a one-yard quarterback keeper for the Rams before leaving early in the fourth quarter with a sore foot. He was 12 of 24 for 189 yards and two interceptions. Replacement Steve Dils threw a 15-yard touchdown pass to Kevin House with 2:38 to play.
Charles White, the NFL's leading rusher, gained 66 yards for a season total of 1,279. He scored from the 8 in the second quarter for the Rams' other touchdown. He had surpassed 100 yards in each of five previous games.
The Rams' wild-card hopes had been tenuous at best. To get a wild-card spot, they would have had to beat the Cowboys and the San Francisco 49ers, and would have had to have had help from the Washington Redskins and St. Louis Cardinals.
The Cowboys drove 80 yards the first time they got the ball. Pelluer, starting in place of Danny White, completed both of his passes, one of them going for a 24-yard gain along the sideline to Walker. Walker's one-yard touchdown came with 8:17 to go when he slashed left. Dallas 10 6 10 3 29 L.A. Rams 7 0 7 7 21
