LAKE PLACID, N.Y., DEC. 22 -- Mikhail Vasiljev scored on a breakaway with less than three minutes left in the third period tonight to give the Soviet Selects a 3-3 tie against Team USA in the finale of their eight-game exhibition hockey series.

He controlled a loose puck at the USA blue line and outskated the defense, beating goalie John Blue with a wrist shot to the glove side at 17:28.

That spoiled a comeback by Team USA, which had gained its first lead of the game 58 seconds earlier on Corey Millen's short-handed goal.

He scored when he skated through the crease and lifted the puck over sprawled Aleksander Tyznyh.

The tie was the first of the series, which Team USA won by 6-1-1. It was the first meeting between the teams at the Olympic Ice Arena since Team USA defeated the Selects, 5-4, in 1983.

After a sluggish first period, Team USA began to assume control of the game, outshooting the Soviets, 16-10, and gaining the territorial edge in play.

But Tyznyh stopped close-in shots by Allen Bourbeau and Craig Janney and two more shots hit the goalposts.
