Gunfire rang out at a crowded high school basketball tournament, hitting one woman in the leg and leaving three men slashed by knives in a brawl between rival Atlantic City, N.J., gangs, officials said.
Order was restored quickly after the fight and the Seagull Classic tournament at Holy Spirit High School continued, said Detective Sgt. Ron Faisst of the Absecon Police Department.
The brawl broke out Saturday night inside the high school's packed gymnasium where about 1,500 people were watching teams from across the country play in the annual tournament, he said.
"About 9:30 p.m. a large fight broke out in the gym and a few people tried to leave through a rear door," Faisst said. "They were approached by a male with a gun and when they tried to run, he opened fire, firing four shots."
A 21-year-old woman was struck once just above her left knee and was taken to Atlantic City Medical Center for treatment, he said. Two men in their early 20s and a male teenager suffered slash wounds, one in the stomach, one above the eye and another on the head. All three slashing victims, injured inside the auditorium, were treated at a nearby hospital and released.
