Minnesota North Stars -- LW Steve Payne, 29, who reinjured his neck earlier this season, retired after a 10-year career; Payne played all 613 of his NHL games with Minnesota, scoring 228 goals. World Junior Hockey Championships -- In Moscow, the United States scored four second-period goals en route to a 6-4 victory over West Germany. In other games, Canada defeated Czechoslovakia, 4-2, for its second win, Sweden beat Poland, 13-0, and the Soviet Union beat Finland, 6-1.
BASKETBALL NBA -- Named Dominique Wilkins, who averaged 34 points a game and hit 28 of 29 free throws in leading the Atlanta Hawks to a 2-1 record, player of the week.
