PINE BLUFF, ARK., DEC. 30 -- Flint Hill of Oakton, Va. used balance scoring to upset Miami Senior High, 73-61, tonight and claim its third consecutive King Cotton Holiday Classic championship.
Brandon Adams led the Falcons with 18 points, Ronny Thompson added 15, Reggie Chambers scored 14 and Leslie Hughes and Arron Bain chipped in with 12 apiece as Flint Hill improved to 11-1. Miami, which came into the game ranked third in the nation, fell to 12-1.
Flint Hill, ranked 12th nationally, built as much as a 14-point lead at the end of the third quarter over the Stingarees. Two free throws from Ronny Thompson (15 points) and an inside move by Bain moved the lead back to 10, and Flint Hill was never in trouble.
In Myrtle Beach, S.C., Joe Rhett scored 20 points to lead Eau Claire of Columbia, S.C. to a 77-68 victory over DeMatha in the consolation game of the Beach Ball Classic.
DeMatha's Jerrod Mustaf led the Stags (9-2) with 18 points and 12 rebounds.
DeMatha, ranked fifth nationally among high school basketball teams, lost its first game of the season Tuesday night when the Stags were beaten by Hillcrest of Simpsonville, S.C., 84-68.
In Las Vegas, Coolidge (9-2), ranked ninth nationally, was eliminated from a 29-team holiday tournament after losing its second game in four contests. The Colts were eliminated by Oak Hill Academy from Mouth of Wilson, Va., 65-63.
