NFL -- Named RB Herschel Walker of Dallas Cowboys and DE Richard Dent of Chicago Bears as NFC offensive and defensive players of week, respectively, and RB Eric Dickerson of Indianapolis Colts and LB Cornelius Bennett of Buffalo Bills as AFC offensive and defensive players of the week, respectively. RB Christian Okoye of Kansas City Chiefs was named NFL rookie of week.

TRACK AND FIELD Eamonn Coghlan, longtime star middle-distance runner, will miss the 1988 indoor season because of an injury suffered Dec. 11 at his home in Rye, N.Y., it was announced. "I tore a ligament in my sacroiliac and am unable to train," Coghlan told Howard Schmertz, Millrose Games director.

HORSE RACING West Virginia Racing Commission -- Approved Charles Town Races' request for 251 racing dates for 1988. The season will begin on Jan. 1 and run through Dec. 18.

BASKETBALL NBA All-Star Voting -- Los Angeles Lakers' Magic Johnson continues to lead Western Conference players in fan balloting, receiving 269,569 votes. Second-leading vote-getter among Western Conference players is Akeem Olajuwon of Houston, who leads centers with 206,451 votes. Indiana Pacers -- Put G Scott Skiles on injured-reserve list and announced he would have arthroscopic surgery on his right knee today. In 14 games with the Pacers this season, Skiles averaged 3.1 points and 3.6 assists in 14.6 minutes per game.
