VANCOUVER, DEC. 31 -- Greg Adams scored early in the third period tonight to give the Vancouver Canucks a 2-1 victory over the Winnipeg Jets in a fight-marred game.

Adams, who didn't score his 20th goal until his final game of the season last year, scored his 21st by swooping behind the net and picking up a loose puck that he jammed behind goaltender Pokey Reddick.

It was the third game-winner of the season for Adams.

Aside from a first-period rumble that delayed play for half an hour, the game was a listless one for the 9,327 New Year's Eve fans.

In other games, defenseman Gary Suter's second goal of the game, with eight seconds to go, gave the Flames a 5-4 victory over the Philadelphia Flyers in Calgary and put them one point ahead of the Oilers in first place of the Smythe Division; Rejean Lemelin and the Boston Bruins shut out the Sabres, 2-0, in Boston; the Red Wings beat the St. Louis Blues, 7-2, in Detroit as Steve Yzerman had a goal and three assists, increasing his point streak to a club-record 18 games; Bob Mason maintained his unbeaten goaltending record against the North Stars with the Chicago Blackhawks' 4-1 victory in Bloomington, Minn., and James Patrick scored two goals in a four-goal second period as the Rangers defeated the Quebec Nordiques, 6-1, in New York.
