Arizona State defensive coordinator Larry Marmie reportedly has emerged as the leading candidate to become the Sun Devils' new football coach and could be named within days, school sources said.

Southern Methodist trustees contributed $1.8 million -- $100,000 more than their goal -- to reimburse the university for expenses stemming from a pay-for-play football scandal, officials said.

Proceeds of the fund-raising effort will be used to cover the costs of investigations of the scandal, which cost SMU its 1987 football season.
