CHARLOTTESVILLE, JAN. 6 -- Mel Kennedy scored 17 points and Richard Morgan provided 14 tonight as Virginia posted a 65-56 victory over cold-shooting Radford.

The Cavaliers (7-6), who also got 11 points from John Johnson, took advantage of Radford's seven-of-35 first-half shooting to open up a 39-17 intermission spread.

Radford (6-6) outscored Virginia, 39-26, in the second half, but never got closer than the final nine-point margin.

Aswan Wainright led the Highlanders with 14 points, Donnell Howard contributed 11 points and Ron Shelburne and Rod Cousin 10 apiece.

Virginia, coming off a 2-5 road stand, held a 14-11 lead before Johnson keyed a 9-0 run with two baskets and one assist to give the Cavaliers a 23-11 advantage with 6:56 left before intermission.
