Thursday night's snowfall forced the cancellation of thoroughbred racing at both area tracks yesterday and caused the postponment of numerous high school events.
Racing is scheduled to resume today at Laurel and Charles Town (W.Va.) race tracks, beginning at noon at Laurel and at 7:15 p.m. at Charles Town.
There was no racing scheduled at Rosecroft Raceway. The Oxon Hill harness track closed Dec. 30 and will reopen Jan. 15.
The cancellation was Laurel's fourth because of weather conditions since Nov. 11. Before yesterday's program was scrapped, track management announced it will carry an extra race -- for a total of 11 -- on Saturdays and Sundays for the remaining eight weeks of its meeting.
Those programs, as well as the 11-race holiday cards of Jan. 18 and Feb. 15, will begin at noon.
More than 130 high school basketball games were postponed, as well as the D.C. Invitational track meet and the 10th annual Park View gymnastics invitational.
The indoor track and field meet for boys and girls has been rescheduled for Friday, Jan. 22. More than 40 teams had been invited to participate.
The Park View meet has been tentatively rescheduled for Saturday, Jan. 23. Twenty-four teams from Virginia's Northern and Northwest regions are scheduled to participate.
More than half of yesterday's basketball games will be made up on Monday. Montgomery, Prince George's, Anne Arundel and Howard county games and Southern Maryland Athletic Conference contests for boys and girls will be played on that day.
Northern Virginia games have been rescheduled throughout next week, with the majority to take place either Monday or Wednesday. Yesterday's scheduled Interhigh games will be played Wednesday.
A few games have been scheduled for today, including Metro Conference contests St. John's at Gonzaga (2:45 p.m.), DeMatha at Carroll (7) and Ireton at McNamara (7:30).
