RICHMOND, JAN. 16 -- Peter Woolfolk scored a game high 28 points to lead Richmond to an 86-70 Colonial Athletic Association win over visiting George Mason here tonight.

The victory improved Richmond to 12-2, 3-0 in league play. The Patriots dropped to 7-6, 1-2.

The Spiders led the Patriots, 15-5, at the 12:23 mark of the first half. The Spiders were in control from that point, and the Patriots never got closer than eight points the rest of the game.

That was at 58-50 with 8:17 to play. But Mike Winiecki made a layup and was fouled. He then sank two free throws to put the Spiders on top, 61-50. Kenny Sanders' two free throws at the 7:28 mark cut the Patriots' deficit to nine. But a free throw by Rodney Rice, two more by Winiecki and a layin by Woolfolk pushed the margin to 14 with 5:23 remaining. Mason was never closer than 13 the rest of the game.

Rice scored 16 points for Richmond, Winiecki had 13 and Ken Atkinson scored 12 points for the Spiders.

Amp Davis led George Mason with 23. Sanders scored 16 and Steve Smith chipped in 14 in a losing effort.

Thirteen of George Mason's 20 field goals were from the three-point area. Davis led the Patriots with five three-point shots.

"We talked at the pregame meeting about rebounding, but we didn't get it done," said George Mason Coach Rick Barnes.

Richmond outrebounded the Patriots, 39-29, including a 20-8 offensive rebounding advantage.

The Patriots next game is Monday night at home against Liberty.

Scranton 80, Catholic 71:

Art Trippett scored 22 points and John Paul Andrejko added 20 as Scranton beat host Catholic.

Shawn Gallagher had 18 points and eight rebounds and Tom Downy had 12 points and six rebounds for Scranton (13-1), the second-ranked team in Division III. The Cardinals (8-5) were paced by Jim Bergan's career-high 20 points.

The Cardinals trailed, 23-13, early in the first quarter, but went ahead with a 17-4 run over the remaining 7:49 of the first half.

Catholic led, 49-46, with 13:01 remaining in the game, but Scranton then went on a 9-0 run and never trailed again.

For Catholic, Mike Lonergan had 17 points and seven assists and Kenny Wills scored 16 points.

Marymount 91, Newport News 79:

Rick Hagerman had 25 points and nine rebounds and P.T. Gardner added 24 points to lead the Arlington school (6-4) to victory at Marymount. Keith West scored 18 points for Newport News Apprentice (3-12).
