Mike Sumner scored two key baskets in overtime to lead American University to a 75-69 Colonial Athletic Association overtime win over East Carolina last night in Greenville, N.C.

AU (6-9, 2-2 in the CAA) got possession in regulation with 26 seconds left, but Mike Sampson's 17-foot jumper missed. Sumner was called for an offensive rebounding foul, giving ECU (7-8, 3-1) a chance to win with a one-and-one with one second left. ECU missed, sending the game into overtime, 65-65.

AU was led by sophomore Daryl Holmes with 18 points. Holmes forced the overtime when he scored after Sampson's missed three-pointer with 40 seconds left.

AU started the overtime with a Dale Spears jumper and led throughout the extra period. At 69-68, Sumner scored two baskets, including a slam dunk with 50 seconds left.

"I'm not happy with the execution or the defense," said AU Coach Ed Tapscott. "I'm happy that we hung tough and that we showed a little character."

UDC 79, Elizabeth City State 59: The Firebirds started quickly and got several early breakaway slams for their 15th straight home win.

UDC (10-3, 5-0 at home) opened the game with poise, rebounding well, shooting well, blocking shots and making Coach Wil Jones smile a bit.

Jones said, "We're coming on and I think my guard Darryl Wilson solidifies that. He should settle down a little bit. Tonight he tried some things that he ordinarily wouldn't do but he was the cause to us running."

With nine minutes left before intermission, Elizabeth City (5-9) closed to 22-16 on a driving layup by Darryl Riddick, but UDC went on a 14-0 run.

The Vikings geared up for one more rally at the outset of the second half. Trailing by 44-22, they outscored UDC, 8-3, to close to 47-30. But UDC started rolling again, as Lyndon DeBellotte got a jam, followed by a rebound jam by 6-foot-9 center Terrence Ball and yet another rebound dunk over two Vikings by Richard McLean to push the lead to 53-30.

Howard trailed, 48-38, at halftime after being outrebounded, 20-13, and committing 11 turnovers.

The Bison turned the ball over on their first three possessions of the second half and Wright State took a 54-38 lead on Ronde Robinson's layup.

Howard, which was led in scoring by guard George Hamilton's 15 points, was never closer than 13 points after that.

John Spencer had 13 points and nine rebounds for Howard.
